How Marketplaces Pay Sellers in Crypto: Split Payments or Batch Payouts

Guides

Two ways to pay marketplace sellers in crypto, split payments and batch payouts, with the setup steps, fees and a launch checklist.

How do marketplaces pay sellers in crypto?

A marketplace can pay sellers in crypto in two ways, and BlockBee supports both. It can split each on-chain payment as it is paid, so the seller's share goes straight to the seller's wallet and the commission to the marketplace. Or it can collect payments in its own wallet and pay sellers later, in batches and in coins such as USDT, through a payouts API. Splitting pays sellers sooner; collecting first lets you hold funds until an order is delivered or a refund window closes.

How do the two models compare?

Split at payment Collect, then pay out
When the seller is paid When BlockBee forwards the on-chain payment When you send the payout
Can you hold funds for refunds or disputes? No: BlockBee forwards each on-chain payment to the addresses you set Yes
Seller's address needed When you create the payment address Before each payout
BlockBee limit Up to 20 addresses per payment Up to 100 payout requests per payout, same coin
BlockBee fees Payment fee Payment fee, then payout fee

How do split payments work?

With BlockBee's Custom Payment Flow, you create a payment address for each order. To split it, pass several addresses with their shares instead of one:

0.9@SELLER_ADDRESS|0.1@MARKETPLACE_ADDRESS

By default, BlockBee deducts its fee and the network fee from the payment, then forwards the rest to those addresses in those shares. With prepaid fees, BlockBee's fee (and, for tokens, the network fee) comes from your credits instead, until they run out.

Things to know:

  • To set addresses per payment, enable Address Override when you create the API key. Once a payment address is created, its destination addresses stay fixed.
  • One payment can split across up to 20 addresses. Shares range from 0.0001 (0.01%) to 1 and must add up to 1.
  • Each extra address raises the coin's minimum payment: multiply it by 1 + (N - 1) / 3, where N is the number of addresses. For USDT on Polygon, the 0.5 USDT minimum becomes about 0.67 USDT with two addresses.
  • Very small shares can fail. BlockBee's docs warn that a share as small as 1% "may fail in some cryptocurrencies due to the dust threshold": 546 satoshis on Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash, 5,460 litoshis on Litecoin.
  • Once forwarded, the money is in the seller's wallet.

How do batch payouts to sellers work?

Here payments arrive in your BlockBee Self-Custodial Wallet and you pay sellers when you decide. Of the wallet's three key shares, you hold two (your API Key V2 and Recovery Key) and BlockBee holds one. Without your API key, BlockBee cannot move the funds.

  1. Upgrade to API Key V2 and store the Recovery Key. Lose both and you lose the wallet for good.
  2. Route payments to the wallet with the Set Self-Custodial Wallet option.
  3. Create a payout request per seller as each order clears.
  4. Process the requests as a payout: up to 100 per payout, all in the same coin. Extra requests stay pending until you add them to a later payout.
  5. Track it with a payout webhook: done, or error or expired when it needs attention.

An expired payout sent nothing, and you can retry expired and error payouts with the same payout ID without paying the same outputs twice. The wallet must also cover network fees, and for tokens such as USDT on Ethereum, hold the native coin (ETH, BNB and so on) for gas. For setup detail, see our guide to mass payout solutions and the payouts docs.

What does one sale cost under each model?

A customer pays $100 in USDT on Polygon, and your commission is 10%. The figures use BlockBee's published starting rates: a 1% payment fee and a 0.5% payout fee. USDT on Polygon has a minimum fee of 0. Network fees apply in both models and are not estimated here. The refund row shows this example's policy: the marketplace refunds the customer in full.

Split 90/10 at payment Collect, then pay out
BlockBee payment fee 1% of $100 = $1.00 1% of $100 = $1.00
Seller receives 90% of $99.00 = $89.10, before network fees $89.10 in full, sent as a payout; your wallet pays the payout fee and network fee on top
Marketplace keeps, before network fees 10% of $99.00 = $9.90 $9.90, less the payout fee
BlockBee payout fee None 0.5% of $89.10 = about $0.45
When the seller is paid When the payment is forwarded When you send the payout
Refund of $100 Separate funds, or repayment from the seller Before the seller payout: sent as a payout from your wallet, the retained $99.00 plus $1.50 more ($1.00 shortfall + $0.50 payout fee at 0.5%), before network fees. After the seller payout: separate funds or repayment from the seller (this example's policy).

So a split costs one BlockBee fee per sale, and collecting first costs two. Payout fees start at 0.5% and fall with volume, and BlockBee counts payouts in the volume that sets its rates; the payment fee also depends on your industry's risk tier. The fees page has a fee calculator and a network fee estimator.

Which coin and network should you pay sellers in?

Confirm each seller's coin and network before the first payout, then send a small test payout. BlockBee payouts run on networks including Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Polygon and Tron, and the cryptocurrencies page, which the payout docs cite for supported tickers, lists USDT on all four.

Splits use the payment networks instead: BlockBee accepts USDT on 10 networks and USDC on 10, listed on the cryptocurrencies page. Each split address must be valid for the payment's coin and network, or the API rejects the payment.

What should you look for in a seller payout provider?

Three questions are specific to marketplaces:

  • Split at payment: can it divide each payment between seller and marketplace as it arrives, and across how many addresses?
  • Holding through refunds: can you keep funds until a refund or dispute window closes, then pay sellers in batches?
  • Small commissions: will a small share, such as a 1% commission, still go through on the coins you accept?

For general criteria such as custody, webhooks, limits and fees, see our guide to mass payout solutions.

What should you check before launch?

  • Decide how long you hold funds after a sale. No hold means splits can work; holding funds through a refund or dispute window needs collect-then-pay-out.
  • Decide who funds a refund after a split: the seller or the marketplace.
  • Settle, for your jurisdiction, which identity and tax checks you need on sellers, and what rules apply if you hold their funds before you pay them.

Frequently asked questions

Can a marketplace pay sellers in crypto without holding their money?

Yes. Give each payment its own split when you create its payment address, and BlockBee forwards the seller's share of the on-chain payment to the seller's wallet and your commission to yours.

How many sellers can one payout pay?

One BlockBee payout bundles up to 100 payout requests in the same coin. Requests over the limit stay pending until you add them to a later payout.

Can I pay sellers in USDT?

Yes, on networks including Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Polygon and Tron. Ask each seller which network their address is on before you send.

What happens if a payout fails?

BlockBee marks it error or expired. Process it again with the same payout ID; earlier attempts are checked on-chain first, so the same outputs are never paid twice.

Do seller payouts count towards BlockBee's volume discount?

Yes. BlockBee counts deposits and payouts in your 30-day volume, so paying sellers through BlockBee also moves you towards lower rates.
